Rain Gutter Wind Noise

Trying to sleep rest or work with the annoying sound of water dripping and trickling through your gutter downspouts can be maddening even when the noise volume isn t very high.

The rivet gun tapping one by the window might be gutter or a loose piece of flashing or siding or trim flapping in the wind. It is said that these things will give you around 5 km h more top speed because of increased aerodynamics. Contractors have tried fixes like installing a lead plate in the elbow then a magnetic cushioned plate but those fixes usually just change the tone from a metallic drip drip drip to a thud thud thud sound. It didn t involve rain gutters but it probably should have.

If you have a window near your gutters and downspouts the persistent clunk clunk clunk or thud thud thud of rain hitting metal may wake you up rather than help you drift to dreamland. Adjust the downspout angle. But they also reduce wind noise. Surely not every gutter is as noisy as yours.

Your gutters have a clog. If not loose sometimes if the hangers are too far apart the gutter sheet metal will buckle in and out making a sound sort of like flexing a cookie sheet or pie tin back and forth a metallic flutter sound. The noise usually is caused by water falling down the downspouts and hitting the fitting at the bottom which on many gutters is sharply bent and empties the water into a splash pan or better. These raingutter fillers are plastic pieces that can be glued in the raingutters on either side of the windshield.

Gutter downspouts with elbows can sometimes amplify the sound of water dripping through them. Once the rainquiettminsert is installedinto the downspout it prevents theraindrops from hitting the bottom ofdownspout breaking up the raindrops asthey hit the insert. If the gutter is close to a bedroom window this can get annoying.
